Nurse CoachPractice Settings
Nurse Coaches work with individuals and/or groups in all areas and specialties of nursing practice. They “…are staff nurses, ambulatory care nurses, case managers, advanced practice nurses, nursing faculty, nurse researchers, educators, administrators, or nurse entrepreneurs.” (Hess, D., Dossey, B., Southard, M., p.10) Their involvement in the Nurse Coach role “…is dependent on coach specific education, training, experience, position, and the population they serve.” (Hess, D., Dossey, B., Southard, M., p. 3, 10).
The Nurse Coach Domain
The body of knowledge of Nurse Coaching is specific to the competencies of the Nurse Coach, which are embedded, in the basic precepts of Holistic Nursing. Knowledge and skills esssential for the Nurse Coach are driven by the Standards of Care and defined as Competencies. The inclusion and weighting of competencies are validated by the Role-Delineation Study. A preliminary draft of these essentials can be found here. Nurse Coach Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility criteria required for Certification as an AHNCC Certified Nurse Coach includes an active, unrestricted registered nurse license, minimal education and practice as a registered nurse, continued education and practice in the role of the Professional Nurse Coach role. Certification Fees Fees for the Nurse Coach Certification examination range from $350-$425.00. Discounts are offered to nurse members of the Endorsing Organizations of the Professional Nurse CoachRole: Scope and Competencies (2012) by Hess, Dossey, Southard, Luck, Schuab, & Bark; and to AHNCC Certified Holistic Nurses. Application Process
The Nurse Coach Handbook can be uploaded by clicking here. The Application can be uploaded here. The first examination will be offered January 12-26, 2013. Applications must be received no later than December 1, 2012 to be eligible for the first examination.
